Mental health is a universal human right that PWDs and their families need to access

OUR HISTORY

Background of Disability Rights & Empowerment Trust

Disability Rights & Empowerment Trust (DRET) is a non-profit organization established in Kenya under Trustees Perpetual Succession Act, Cap 164 Laws of Kenya. The organization is committed to fostering a society that upholds justice and human dignity for all. Founded by a Human Rights Advocate who served as a Senior Resident Magistrate, Lecturer and in the Civil Society for many years.

DRET emerged from the Founder’s (a person with disability) recognition that disability was often perceived through the lens of impairment rather than as a matter of human rights. This perspective led to rights violations, humiliation, stigma, and limited access to services for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the country. Drawing from personal experiences as a child, youth, and as a professional, the founder identified inequalities and government policies that failed to address the needs of PWDs. These observations prompted the deliberate efforts that culminated in the formation of DRET, with an initial focus on promoting, enhancing, and protecting the rights of PWDs, particularly children and women.

DRET Principles

DRT believes that, PWDs rights are human rights, a belief that shapes the organizational policies and activities.  DRET therefore in working with and for PWDs, focuses on the following approaches pertinent to disability rights protection:

  1. A right’s-based framework.
  2. Equality and equity: special focus on gender equality, non-discrimination and age-sensitivity.
  3. The best interests of the PWDs.
  4. Inclusion and participation.

Leadership and Governance

The organization is governed by the Board of Trustees with the fiduciary responsibility. It provides a strategic framework within which the management executes programs. The Trustees are supported by an Advisory Board. The management is responsible for implementing the programs and the policies of DRET.
